Biography

Pierre Aubenque (b. 1929 in L’Isle-Jourdain, France) is Professor Emeritus at Sorbonne University as well as honorary secretary general of L’Institut International de Philosophie / International Institute of Philosophy.

Aubenque received his agrégation de philosophie in 1950 and, in 1962, was awarded a “Docteur ès-lettres” for “La prudence chez Aristote”, which was published by Presses universitaires de France in the following year.

Aubenque taught at the Universities of Montpellier (1955-60), Besançon (1960-1964), Aix-Marseille (1964-1969), Hamburg (1966-1969) and became a professor in the history of ancient philosophy at Paris-Sorbonne in 1970. After having been given emeritus status in 1992, he was a permanent visiting professor at the University of Leipzig until 1997. He has served as director of the Centre de recherches sur la pensée antique (1973 until 1991) and, between 1988 and 2010, as secretary general for the Institut international de Philosophie.

Aubenque is widely recognized for his studies on Aristotle; next to “La prudence chez Aristote” he also authored Le problème de l’être chez Aristote : Essai sur la problématique aristotélicienne (Presses universitaires de France, 1962), Études sur la ‘Métaphysique’ d’Aristote: actes (Vrin, 2009), as well as Problèmes aristotéliciens I: Philosophie théorique (Vrin, 2009) and Problèmes aristotéliciens II: Philosophie pratique (Vrin, 2011).

In addition to (and together with) the classics, Aubenque extensively dealt with the thinking of Martin Heidegger; among other publications such as “Encore Heidegger et le nazisme” (Le Débat, vol. 48, 1988) or “Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) in memoriam” (Les Etudes philosophiques, XXX-3, 1976) he edited « Ernst Cassirer- Martin Heidegger: Débat sur le Kantisme et la Philosophie (Davos, mars 1929) et autres textes de 1929–1931 » (Beauchesne, 1972).
