Terri Geis, Professor at The European Graduate School / EGS
Terri Geis is Curator of Academic Engagement at Pomona College Museum of Art (Claremont, US).
Prior to this, Geis served as Director of Education and Interpretation at The Fowler Museum at UCLA, Los Angeles (2016-2018) and, between 2011-2016, as Curator of Academic Programs; also at Pomona College Museum of Art. In addition, she has held positions at The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and at Pasadena Heritage (US).
After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and English Literature from the University of St. Andrews (UK) as well as a Master of Philosophy in Women’s Studies from Trinity College (Ireland) Geis earned a PhD in Art History and Theory from the University of Essex (UK) with a dissertation entitled Indigenism and Gender in the Art and Critical Reception of María Izquierdo.
Geis co-curated, with Manthia Diawara, the exhibition, film and publication project Exquisite Corpse: Ted Joans, A Video Exhibition by David Hammons, presented at La Sirène de Yene (Dakar, Senegal) as well as at Maumaus/ Lumiar Cité (Lisbon, Portugal) in 2018/19 and, with Matthew Robb, co-curated the exhibition How to Make the Universe Right: The Art of Priests and Shamans from Vietnam and Southern China (The Fowler Museum at UCLA, 2017).
At Pomona College Museum of Art Geis was part of the research team for the exhibition Prometheus 2017: Four Artists from Mexico Revisit Orozco and, with exhibition organizer Rebecca McGrew, co-edited a same-named publication that “sheds new light on the legacy of Mexican muralism” (published in association with Getty Publications); together they also co-edited R.S.V.P. Los Angeles: The Project Series at Pomona (2015), celebrating the 50th Project Series exhibition at Pomona College Museum of Art.
In 2012, Geis edited In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States (with Ilene Susan Fort and Tere Arcq; Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Prestel Verlag), featuring 48 Mexican and US-based female surrealist artists.
An editorial board member of Studies in Photography (The Scottish Society for the History of Photography) and Nierika (Universidad Iberoamericano Mexico), Geis has published numerous book essays, journal articles, and essays in exhibition and collection catalogs, including the forthcoming book chapters “Stella Snead: Spectacular Phenomena” (in eds. Tilly Craig, Victoria Ferentinou, and Judith Noble, British Women Surrealists, London: Fulgur Press) and “The Fireplace of My Thoughts: Gordon Onslow Ford and Jacqueline Johnson” (in ed. Fariba Bogzaran, Gordon Onslow Ford Monograph, Inverness, California: Lucid Art Foundation).
Other recent essays include “Uncovering the Sacred: World Religions and Ancient Myths” (in eds.
