New Leading Thinkers course on Friedrich Nietzsche

The PACT Division of the EGS is very pleased to announce that the “Leading Thinkers” series will continue with a course on Friedrich Nietzsche led by Professor Vanessa Lemm. The price for this 8-week course is $850. It will be conducted on Zoom.

Nietzsche, a thinker of our time

Nietzsche coined the term “untimely (unzeitgemäß)” to describe the essence of his critical philosophy. He is the “untimely” philosopher par excellence and paradoxically, this is why his critique of Western philosophies, societies, and cultures remains relevant and continues to have currency today. This course will offer a selective reading of his texts and discuss the relevance of his philosophy for some of the most influential debates in 20 th and 21st-century philosophy.

Vanessa Lemm is Professor of Political Philosophy and Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Provost at the University of Greenwich, London, UK. She is an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne, Australia. She has published widely on the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, contemporary political thought, biopolitics,
posthumanism, animal, and plant studies. She is the author of Nietzsche’s Animal Philosophy: Culture, Politics, and the Animality of the Human Being (Fordham University Press, 2009), Nietzsche y el pensamiento político contemporáneo (Fondo de Cultura Económica, 2013), and Homo Natura: Nietzsche, Philosophical Anthropology, and Biopolitics (EUP, 2020). She recently published with Miguel Vatter the edited volume The Viral Politics of COVID-19: Nature, Home, and Planetary Health (Palgrave 2022) and Nietzsche’s Natures (De Gruyter 2024) with Antonia Ulrich. She is the Editor of Nietzsche- Studien and associated book series at De Gruyter. Her work has been translated into 6 languages.
